A Small Drop of Hope for the Dry Ground: Introducing Drip Irrigation to Rote Island, Indonesia, to Convince Fishermen to Farm during the Dry Season for an Alternative Livelihood

چکیده
Submit Manuscript | http://medcraveonline.com learnt from the Macasan and the Buginese, who stop by in the island on their trip to fish in the Southern seas, that fishing can make much easier money than farming in dry lands. Nevertheless, most of them remain among the poorest in the island. In fact, most of income coming from fishing goes to the boss who owns the boat and equipment, and most importantly, lends them money in time of need. This short review article provides an overview of the Rotenese involvement in fishing, including in fishing in IndonesiaAustralia trans-boundary waters, in connection with their dry land agriculture and lontar tapping tradition. Based this overview, we introduce drip irrigation to help women farming as a source of additional income while their husbands go fishing.

Effects of different irrigation methods and hormone application on water use efficiency, yield, and leaf biochemical traits in potato
Investigation of different irrigation methods on plants is necessary due to limited water resources and the increasing need for food products. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and hormones on morphological and physiological characteristics of potato. Treatments included sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and hormones (gibbere...
متن کاملParametrizing Simple Model between Yield and Evapotranspiration for Amaranthus cruentus under Drip and Sprinkler Irrigations
Amaranthus cruentus, an annual vegetable crop, is known to be highly productive under rain-fed conditions and during the dry season when supplied with water. However, for good water management, there is need to accurately quantify the water consumed by the crop. This paper investigates the water use and biomass yield of differentially irrigated Amaranthus cruentus at different developmental sta...
متن کاملEffects of Deficit and Cutoff Irrigation During Different Phenological Stages of Fruit Growth on Production in Mature Almond Trees cv. ‘Mamaei’
Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is commonly used during different phenological stages of fruit growth and development in almond trees to reduce the amount of irrigation water applied without or with only very small reductions in yield. Therefore, to study the effects of deficit and cutoff irrigation during different phenological stages of fruit growth and development in almond cv. “Mamaei” p...
متن کاملSeed weight in canola as a function of assimilate supply and source-sink ratio during seed filling period
Understanding variation in SW (seed weigh) is of major importance in understanding SY (seed yield) variation. The objective of this study was to determine factors such as SN (seed number) per unit area, SFD (seed filling duration) and SFR (seed filling rate) and temperature, LAI (leaf area index), LAD (leaf area duration), above-ground dry matter, CGR (crop growth rate), leaf dry matter re...
متن کاملAssuring Sustainable Economic Benefit for Farmers by Using Ground Water in Semi-Arid, Hard Rock Areas in India & the Role of UNESCO-IUGS-IGCP Project 523
Out of about 1.2 billion people in India, 68% people live on agriculture as their main occupation. Ground water is therefore an important resource which provides over 70% of rural drinking water supply and about 50% of water used for irrigation. Rains in Monsoon season from June to September, provide the main source of water but they last only for four months and the rest of the year is dry in ...
